5 Things All Vapers Should Know

The world of vaping has boomed since it entered the market in 2011 with a massive cloud of vapour. It’s so popular there are even conventions dedicated to the activity, some even consider it a sport. While there are people who are extremely dedicated to vaping, there are still people who are either just starting or just don’t consider it a sport. No matter your view on vaping here are 5 things all vapers should know:

1. Choose the right juice for your tank

What you load your tank with can determine the longevity of your e-cigarette so choosing the right one is important. Different juices work differently with different tanks. It’s all down to the PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycol) mix as these are the base ingredients for e-liquids. VG is a really thick liquid and when it's heated it creates more gunk in your tank. VG creates a larger cloud so if you are a cloud chaser you are better opting for a heavy duty tank. PG, on the other hand, is lighter, tasteless and odourless - this means it carries flavour better. It also provides that throat hit that ex-smokers would look for. As it is a light formula it would be more suited to a smaller tank. VG/PG can be mixed to create a formula that is suited to your personal preference. However, for a small tank, its advised to use a PG liquid to avoid blockages.

2. What is sub-ohm?

A phrase you will hear a lot on the vaping scene is sub-ohm or sub-ohming. Put simply, sub-ohming is when you use a coil with a resistance lower than one ohm (hence the “sub”). This allows you to put high power through your device and produce those massive clouds that vapers love. Most vapers start out on above-ohm devices before moving to sub-ohm ones as they become more comfortable and experienced with vaping. 3. How To Store Your E-liquids E-liquids have a shelf life of two years but if stored incorrectly this can be shortened. Light and air can affect your e-liquid so it’s important to store them correctly so that you can get the most out of them. Over time, nicotine can alter the colour of your liquid but still keep its properties. Flavours, however, can deteriorate and light and air can speed up this process through oxidisation. So to keep your flavours fresh and tasty store them in a cool dark area. Another way of slowing the process of oxidisation is by keeping your liquids in a fridge. You can even freeze your liquids for longer-term storage, just make sure you transfer the liquids from a plastic container to a glass bottle (if you can, storing your liquids in a dark glass container is always the best option). 4. Keep Your Vape Clean As the expression goes, cleanliness is next to godliness and never is this truer than with vaping. Keeping your tank clean ensures that your clouds retain their flavour and your vape performs to the best of its abilities. When liquid is heated up to produce vapour, the residue left over can gunk up your tank. This is especially true for juices that have a higher level of sweeteners in them. To minimise this, you can disassemble, then gently wash your tank components with warm water (obviously disconnect it from the battery first!) then use something like kitchen roll or a cotton bud to wipe down all the surface where residue has collected. Follow this routine and you’ll be enjoying great tasting vapour for longer.

5. Prep Your Vape Coils

Vape coils can sometimes be temperamental, lasting anywhere from a few days to two weeks depending on your usage. The best way to ensure consistency and maximise their life is to ensure you adequately prepare them before fitting to your vape. The most common issue vapers encounter is a burnt coil where the cotton wick inside the coil gets heated too much, producing a foul taste (if you’ve had it, you know just how bad it can be). To avoid burning out your coils, it important to prime them thoroughly by squirting liquid directly onto the wick. You can also allow your coil to stand in a full tank for an hour after fitting to ensure the maximum amount of liquid is absorbed, giving you a clean taste and a flavour that should remain strong. If that half an hour is too long to wait, there may be value in investing in a second tank to ensure nothing gets in the way of your vaping experience.
