Common Vaping FAQs
Common FAQs About Vaping
1. What is vaping?
Vaping is an act of inhaling and exhaling the vapour produced by an e-cigarette or other similar devices. Unlike a conventional cigarette that delivers nicotine by tobacco combustion, vaping does the same by heating an e-liquid, which makes it much less harmful than smoking.
2. Is vaping safe?
Yes! A majority of the harm from a cigarette comes from tar, carbon monoxide and chemicals released in tobacco combustion, which is not the case with vaping. Several studies on vaping have concluded that it is 95% less harmful than smoking. An expert independent review by Public Health England (PHE) published in 2015 also reiterates the fact that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking. You can read the press release here.
3. Is vaping legal?
Vaping is legal in the UK, but you will have to furnish an age proof that confirms you are above 18 years while purchasing vaping products. You also need to adhere to no smoking restrictions in designated areas. Additionally, there are policies, regulations, and guidelines issued by the UK government on vaping that you can read in detail here.
4. Is vaping expensive?
No! In fact, vaping is much cheaper than smoking. Based on your device and e-liquid selection, it can be up to 90% cheaper than smoking cigarettes and can save you a lot of money. You can read our guide to understand in detail how a chain smoker who smokes a pack of 20 cigarettes daily can save approximately £3,400 a year by switching to vaping.
5. How often should I vape?
There is no fixed frequency as to how much you should vape. It depends on your past smoking habits and you can begin vaping at the same frequency as you were smoking. But, If you are a non-smoker and trying to vape for the first time, keep it low, so that you do not get addicted.
6. Will vaping help me quit smoking?
There is a growing evidence that supports vaping as an effective method to quit smoking with negligible side effects. Many people claim that vaping has helped them to become smoke free. Vaping allows you to maintain your routine and socialise like before that helps to continue it longer. But you must remember that getting off tobacco addiction will need great ‘willpower’.
7. Does vaping taste the same as smoking?
No! A conventional cigarette delivers nicotine by burning tobacco; therefore, it tastes foul and smoky unless you use a flavoured one. Even the flavoured ones are overpowered by the smoky tobacco taste despite being smoother. Since, vaping does not involve combustion, the flavour is more prominent, and you can taste the actual flavour. In addition, vaping offers a plenty of flavour options compared to cigarettes, which means there is always something for everyone.
8. What am I actually inhaling when I am vaping?
When you are vaping, you are inhaling the vapour produced by heating an e-liquid, which is a combination of four ingredients, nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine and flavouring concentrates. The density of vapour can be changed by altering the ratios of these ingredients.
9. What are the different types of vaping devices?
Vaping kits are available in four different types. The first ones are the disposables such as cig-a-likes, which have a fixed battery and they cannot be refilled or customized. Second ones are the pen kits, which may have a fixed or removable battery with slightly more power, but they offer limited customization. Third comes the pod kits that are portable yet larger and powerful than pen kits and offer much more customization. Fourth are the box mods that are extremely powerful and offer tremendous customization to take your vaping experience to a new high.

11. What is sub-ohm vaping and how is it different from regular vaping?
Every vaping kit has an atomiser that houses heating coils, which are small pieces of resistance wires folded into coil or spring shapes. When current passes through these coils they heat up due to the resistance and this heat is used to vaporise the e-liquid. In regular vaping kits, this coil resistance is more than 1Ω, whereas in sub-ohm kits the coil resistance is less than 1Ω. As a result, sub-ohm kits generate more heat that transforms into dense clouds and more flavour, which offers you a smoother experience giving the impression of smoking a Hookah or Shisha.
12. Is vaping more effective than other ways of quitting smoking?
It is widely believed that vaping fares much better in comparison with other means of quitting smoking like the cold turkey method or nicotine replacement therapies. While other methods focus on quitting smoking abruptly or replacing it with chewable nicotine alternatives, vaping is not just about nicotine, it is about habit. When you smoke for long, it becomes your routine and you can’t change your routine in a day or two. Vaping therefore addresses the behavioural aspect by allowing you to keep your routine, but with much less toxins, which makes it better.
13. How long does it take to completely switch from smoking to vaping?
Switching to vaping from smoking takes time to get used to. In the initial days, you will get the urge to go back to smoking but you need to have a firm belief that you can do it. Many people take around 3 months to completely switch from smoking to vaping. It’s better to set a realistic goal in the beginning itself and take your own time to become completely smoke-free.
